John J. Abbate
Mr. Abbate is a graduate of the St. John's University School of Law and has been a trial attorney for over thirty years. He began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Brooklyn District Attorney's office from 1976 until 1980.
Mr. Abbate has
served as a member of the
Suffolk County Bar Association
Judicial Screening Committee
as well as on the Suffolk
County Bar Association
Committee on Professionalism.
He has served as an executive
board member of the Alexander
Hamilton Inns of Court.
He has lectured before
the New York State Trial
Lawyers Association and
was an adjunct professor
in the Adelphi University
legal assistants program
where he taught litigation.
He has taught in the National
Institute for Trial Advocacy
Program at the Hofstra
University Law School.
He is admitted to all New York State Courts and to the United States District Courts in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He is also admitted to the United States Court of Military Appeals and the United States Court of International Trade. He served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge with the rank of captain.
Mr. Abbate has acted as senior trial counsel for many prominent insurance carriers throughout his career and has tried cases in many areas of the law, including: medical and podiatric malpractice, general liability, automobile liability and false arrest. He has represented large corporations, manufacturers and retailers in products liability cases. He has also defended municipalities and police departments in civil rights actions and alleged police brutality cases. Mr. Abbate carries an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell which is its highest rating based on peer evaluation and recommendation.
